American Idol’s new judges are chiming in to Entertainment Weekly on their different judging style and how that will affect the feel of Fox’s hit show. Read more to see what they had to say…
New judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler join seasoned idol judge Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest to dish on the show’s entirely new feel.
The group talked to Entertainment Weekly about Simon Cowell’s departure. Seacrest joked “it’s aged the show down a bit” and said there’s “less of that English dish he always ordered for lunch,” asking if it’s Shepherd’s pie which prompted Jackson to jokingly correct him, saying “it’s the blood pudding.”
“We definitely miss [Simon], but it’s a different kind of vibe. It’s a different kind of energy now,” Jackson tells EW. He says the show really needed the change in its 10th season.
Lopez says this season’s judges collaborate more. “We’re always leaning over to each other and saying, ‘Oh my God, I think she’s good.’ ‘Oof, I don’t get it.’ ‘You don’t like it?’” She says they discuss things more and are completely different from any of the previous judging tables Idol has had.
While the judges are taking a group approach, individual personalities still come through. Seacrest tells Extra Jennifer Lopez might be the tough one. “Jennifer is tough. She gives tough love, and she expects a lot from them, which is good.”
Despite his tough rock star image, Tyler might actually be a softy. Some audition performances even brought him to tears.
“We throw the drift net out and look what comes up? Gold,” Tyler tells EW, “[I’m] crying, honestly, from someone who hit the notes so sweetly and beautifully.”
Looks like the judges have some talent in store for next season. Will you be watching to see who gets Tyler to break down?
