Skating With The Stars: A Surprising Semi-Finals

The semi-finals of Skating With the Stars delivers a group skate, a free skate, the first 10s of the season and a surprise ending. It seems the feud between Johnny Weir and Bethenny Frankel has also been settled. Keep on reading to find out how the Skating With the Stars contestants did this week and who made it to the finals.

Despite previous reports, understudy Jonathan Novack did not jump in to replace Brandon Smith after he dropped out of Skating With the Stars due to illness. It seems the former The Bachelorette contestant trained for four weeks in case a skater was lost during the training period, but was then released. This makes more sense than throwing him into the competition during the semi-finals, especially after not eliminating anyone last week.

Getting on with the show, the three remaining couples skate a group skate to “All I Want For Christmas,” with each couple getting a 30 second window to shine on their own while performing tricks, lifts, throws and what not. Johnny Weir loves the group skate and even gives Bethenny a compliment. Laurieann and Dick also approve, praising the stars for learning how to skate together in such a short amount of time. The judges score each pair individually, but are only allowed to use each paddle once so there are no ties. The judges collaborate to hand out the scores as a unit, giving Rebecca Budig and Fred Palascak a 9, Jonny Moseley and Brooke Castile an 8 and Bethenny Frankel and Ethan Burgess a 7.

All My Children’s Rebecca Budig and Fred Palascak are up first during the free skate where there are no rules. After being told last week that Rebecca needed to rely less on Fred, the duo focus on allowing her to shine on her own more. They give a lovely performance, where Rebecca performs jumps and lifts that require more from her than from her partner. Dick Button deems her program a complete, whole unit – elegant and smooth. Johnny Weir calls it stunning, claiming he was taken to another planet. Laurieann can only add that Rebecca has fulfilled her dream by looking like the skater she has always dreamed of being. Rebecca receives a total of 57, earning a couple 10s in the process.

The Real Housewives of New York City’s Bethenny Frankel and Ethan Burgess are next. During rehearsals Bethenny is determined to pull out all the stops, believing they can win. Ethan is on the same page and adds more complicated elements to their routine. Bethenny looks the most comfortable on the ice she has all season, but still not as comfortable and smooth as Rebecca. Bethenny cries as she faces the judges. Laurieann tells her she should be proud because she gave a beautiful performance. Johnny is impressed this week because she performed from start to finish for the first time. Dick tells her she is a fighter and he noticed all the steps and moves the judges have been wanting to see from her. She receives a total score of 43.

Olympic skier Jonny Moseley took the judges’ advice and went to a ballet class to work on his finesse. After Jonny and Brook perform various lifts and a death spiral, Johnny Weir tells him he is what the competition is all about because he has improved every week. However, he felt his song selection of “Let’s Get it On” cheapened his sensuality and he wanted more soul and heat out of him. Laurieann, on the other hand, loved the song, but urged Jonny to dig deeper. Dick tells Jonny he had vim and vigor and he likes that he listened to their comments about being the leading man. Jonny gets a total score of 52.

After combining the judges’ scores with viewer votes, Jonny Moseley and Brooke Castile are eliminated, surprising just about everyone in the audience, host Vernon Kay and even self proclaimed underdog Bethenny. This means Rebecca Budig and Bethenny Frankel will go head to head tomorrow to see who will be deemed the winner of Skating With the Stars. Tune in Tuesday night at 8:00 pm EST to also watch Judge Johnny Weir perform a routine choreographed by fellow judge Laurieann Gibson.
