‘EastEnders’ bosses have toned down the soap’s harrowing cot death scenes.
In the episodes of the BBC One show – set to be aired on New Year’s Eve (31.12.10) and New Year’s Day (01.01.11) – Ronnie Branning will discover her newborn baby dead before swapping it with Kat Moon’s child but producers have made small edits to the programme after preview audiences found it too distressing.
Scenes where Ronnie (Samantha Womack) is seen holding the hand of her dead son and Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) finds Kat (Jessie Wallace) in blood-soaked pyjamas due to haemorrhaging in bed after giving birth have been removed from the episode planned for broadcast.
The sound of Kat’s baby crying while Ronne walks across the square after discovering her baby has died has also been edited out.
Executive producer Bryan Kirkwood, explained their decision to alter the episode after a preview screening, saying: “We’re very aware of the need to deal with such an emotive subject matter as sudden infant death syndrome sensitively in what is a very powerful, dramatic storyline.
“These are small edits which we have made being mindful of viewer sensitivity but which will in no way detract from the compelling drama, dialogue or performances.”
