Dick Button, Skating With the Stars‘ answer to Dancing With the Stars‘ Bruno Tonioli, says some pretty wacky things to the celebrities, while he constructively criticizes or praises their routines. Despite his off the wall one liners, he does know what he’s talking about when it comes to figure skating.

Just last week, Dick Button told The Real Housewives of New York City’s Bethenny Frankel, “Ice is nice, but liquor can be quicker.” Did it make sense? No, but he also suggested she needed to bend her knees and flow on the ice, which did.

According to his bio on ABC, Dick Button’s knowledge of figure skating stems from the fact that he is the only skater to have won the U.S., North American, European, World and Olympic championships all in the same year. Overall, Button has won two Olympic gold medals, five straight World Championships, seven U.S. National titles and six North American titles.

In addition to his hands-on knowledge of the sport, Button has contributed to the world of figure skating as a commentator for decades. He began covering the Winter Olympic Games for CBS in 1960 and then moved on to ABC Sports in 1962 where, for the next 40 years, he served as the figure skating analyst for many figure skating events. Most recently, Dick covered the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics for NBC. Do you think he ever told Kristi Yamaguchi or Evan Lysacek they had a nice butt on-air, as he did All My Children’s Rebecca Budig?

Aside from being a figure skating expert, Dick Button earned a law degree from Harvard, was an investor and producer of Broadway Theater, wrote two books (albeit on his sport), is a national spokesperson for the Brain Injury Association of America and created the TV series “The Superstars,” “The Superteams” and “Battle of the Network Stars.”

Clearly the man has the credentials to judge Skating With the Stars, but what do you think of Dick Button’s unique commentary?
