NBC’s The Sing-Off is back for a second season of a cappella action! So what kind of talent can we expect to see when the show premieres on December 6th? Keep reading to meet the contestants and get a sneak preview of the premiere episode’s opening performance!
The Backbeats (Los Angeles, California) include some of the best a cappella singers from the University of Southern California and the University of California Los Angeles. “Backbeat has a fresh, original approach to popular music with that old school spirit.”
Eleventh Hour (Kettering, Ohio) is recognized as one of the nation’s top highs school a cappella groups. Not only has the group won 2 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Academy awards (raise your hand if you knew that even existed!), but they’ve also opened for big acts like LeAnn Rimes, The Beach Boys, and sang backup for Kenny Loggins.
Pitch Slapped (Boston, Massachusetts) was founded in 2006. This group of students from the Berklee College of Music has also won several accolades, like the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella awards.
Groove For Thought (Seattle, Washington) has been around since 1998, offering a “unique brand of jazz-and R&B-infused tunes” to a variety of audiences throughout the United States and abroad. In 2005, the group won the National Harmony Sweepstakes Championship, and received the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award for Best Jazz Song in 2006.
Men of Note (Cherry Hill, New Jersey) is an all-male group representing Cherry Hill High alumni. They are three-time winners of the Best of High School A Cappella competition.
Street Corner Symphony (Nashville, Tennessee) was just formed in May of 2010, but with two sets of siblings, they’re pretty in tune with one another! The group “offers a diverse repertoire, while maintaining their rich heritage in gospel music.”
On the Rocks (Eugene, Oregon) is an all-male group of students from the University of Oregon, founded in 1999. You may recognize them as the guys from the viral video performing Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” which had over 6.5 million views. Sounds like this group may have an advantage as a fan favorite!
Committed (Huntsville, Alabama) is yet another all-male group (where are the ladies this season?) founded in 2003 by four high school students at Forest Lake Academy, which stayed together–and apparently multiplied–as they went on to Oakwood University, where they continue to perform.
Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town (Oakland, California) has definitely got more combined musical experience than their competitors. Jerry Lawson was a member of The Persuasions for 40 years, and joined forces with Talk of the Town when they were both hired to perform at a wedding in 2001. Since then, the group has performed with Rod Stewart and on Nickelodeon’s “Jack’s Big Music Show.”
The Whiffenpoofs of Yale (New Haven, Connecticut), aka “The Whiffs,” were founded in 1909 and are the world’s oldest collegiate a cappella group. The group, which covers modern hits as well as classics, has garnered much international acclaim, performing at dozens of foreign destinations.
