The judges’ table isn’t the only thing getting a makeover for season 10 of Fox’s American Idol. Producer Nigel Lythgoe is back, and he’s revealing some big changes in the show’s format. What can fans expect to see? We’ve got all the details!

If you thought that the addition of new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez was all that was going to change this season on American Idol, you’re in for a big surprise!

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, who’s returning to his EP role this year, revealed that fans will see a lot of other changes in the format of the show in its tenth season (has it been that long already?).

The first difference, aside from the judges, is that the elimination round that takes the contestants from 24 to just 12 has been cut.

“I didn’t think [the top 24] were very good, I was bored with them by the time they got there,” Lythgoe told TVGuide.com in an interview. This season, the 12 finalists will be announced much earlier in the process, though no word on how those 12 will be revealed has been released.

But perhaps one of the most unexpected changes to the show will be the addition of competition-style challenges. Each finalist will be put to the test, having to prove themselves as pop stars in areas like self-promotion, awards show performances complete with a band and back-up dancers, and they’ll even have to perform in their own music video!

In other words, this season’s winner will have to be a well-rounded performer, and have more than just musical chops and a nice personality to get them through.

The re-vamped season of American Idol premieres Wednesday, January 12 on Fox.

How to make: A fashionable cake

The Stella McCartney ‘fruit print’ has become one of the most iconic patterns for the season, with high street brands such as Zara following suit. However, the look can be fairly difficult to pull off unless you’re a stick thin model, so we’ve found a way to get your fashion fix and your hunger fix for a fraction of the cost of a real Stella. Courtesy of Apollinas. Ingredients: Directions Heat oven to 350°F. Butter two 8?, 9? or 10? round cake pans, line the bottoms with greaseproof paper, butter again, and dust with flour, tapping out the excess. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.Using an electric mix, beat the butter and sugar on medium-high until fluffy – this will take around 2 to 3 minutes.  Mix in the grated zest of the oranges and lemons.  Beat in the vanilla, then the eggs one at a time.Reduce mixer speed to low.
